THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY YEAR

 

The three clubs celebrating their 50th anniversary were Windsor Downton, Toronto Central and Hamilton Central

 

Since 15 or more new clubs were organized each year, new Regions and new Zones had to be added.

The International Guest Speaker at the Convention was International President Lion W.R. "Dick" Bryan.

 

E.C. Baum, Manager of the Extension Division at Chicago was present at the Convention. Also in attendance was former District "A" Secretary Don Dixon. He had already spent a week in Ontario contacting former friends or acquaintances as he was seeking to be reappointed as the Multiple District "A" Secretary.

 

E.C. Baum appeared before Council to present a proposal whereby Multiple District "A" Secretary would be returned to his former position as Special Representative in Quebec and Don Dixon would resume his former position as Multiple District Secretary. Council Chair Gerry Doughty speaking on behalf of all those present told Mr. Baum that they were very satisfied with Larryís work and there was no question of taking Don Dixon back as Secretary.

Fifty First Multiple District "A" Convention

May 30-June 2, 1971 Kingston , Ontario

 

18 new clubs organized during 1970-1971.

 

Club Redistribution:

Council Chair Moore appointed a Committee to look into the distribution of the clubs amongst the Districts. Committee under PCC Dutil was to report findings at the mid-winter Council meeting.

 

The Committee looking into the distribution of the clubs recommended that two new Districts be created. There was a lot of paperwork involved and many questions to be answered before Lions International approved the creation of the new Districts. They would come into operation only on July 1, 1972 .

 

Campaign Funding:

The campaign to raise funds to be used for Tris Coffinís candidacy to the Third International Vice President had been far from successful and this was aired at the Board Meeting.

 

It was recommended and approved that the sum of .25 per member be taken out of the per capita collected and that the aforesaid .25 be set up as a reserve which could be used when a Lion becomes a candidate for a position of higher than that of District Governor.

 

It was decided that the International Officersí Election and Promotion Committee would administer the fund created by the reserve.

Multiple District "A" now had 519 Clubs and 18,266 members.

 

Two new Districts approved by Lions International came into operation July 1, 1972 . They were numbered A-12 and A-14 as A-13 was not liked by the Lions for superstitious reasons.

Second International Vice President Lion Johnny Balboa was the Guest Speaker. Our own Lion Tris Coffin, the First International Vice President, introduced him.

 

The opening and necrology ceremonies were heightened by the presence of His Excellency Roland Michener, Governor-General of Canada, who had accepted the invitation of the Host Committee of the Cornwall Convention.

Note:

A large contingent of Lions, ladies and friends from Multiple District "A" as well as Lions from other parts of Canada attended the International Convention in Miami Beach where Lion Tris Coffin, Montreal , Quebec , was elected International President. He was the third Canadian to occupy this high office.

 

At the request of International President Lion Tris Coffin, the fall Multiple District "A" Council and Board of Governors meetings were held at the hotel Chateau Champlain in Montreal where the members of the International Board were also holding their fall meeting. It can be added that the council meeting was a very long one lasting late in the evening and on again the next day.

 

Fifty Fourth Multiple District "A" Convention

May 24-28, 1974 Sudbury , Ontario

 

The year 1973-1974 closed with 537 Clubs: 419 in Ontario ; 117 in Quebec ; 1 in Newfoundland .

 

The delegates deliberated a number of key issues:

 

ÿ      Since the financial statement showed a deficit, either cut the expenses or have a better control;

ÿ      Create a manual to record procedures and policies as a supplement to the by-laws;

ÿ      Retire parade and band trophies as they cannot be repaired;

ÿ      Each Governor to appoint a reporter from his District who will send news to the magazine committee

ÿ      Consider deleting the Youth Exchange and Leo committees as their activities are those of the Districts;

ÿ      At future Board meetings, each one attending will pay for his or her luncheon which had been paid by Multiple District "A" up until now;

ÿ      At future Convention, consider to hold the opening and necrology ceremonies separately

 

It was proposed and agreed to have five clocks, representing the time zones, installed in the foyer of the building of the Associationís Headquarters to commemorate the term of Lion Tris Coffin as International President.

 

The Secretary announced that Past Council Chair and Extension Representative Lion Dalton Higgs had passed away in London , Ontario .

Council Chair elected for the term 1974-1975: Lion Jim M. Pemberton (A-9)

 

Election of a candidate for the office of International Director. Three Lions were candidates for the position of International Director from Canada . One had to be endorsed as the candidate from Multiple District "A"quot;A"A"quot;. These Lions were Past District Governor Lion "Dick" Hyndman (A5), Past District Governor Lion "Bill" Maguire (A3) and "Bob" Zimmerman. Lion "Bob" Zimmerman was endorsed.

Fifty Fifth Multiple District "A" Convention

May 23-27, 1975 Hamilton , Ontario

 

The Multiple District "A" Dues were increased from $4.75 to $6.00.

 

Council Chair Pemberton had added a redistricting committee to the many others of Multiple District "A"quot;A"A"quot;. Past District Governor Gerry Cholette was appointed to chair this new committee which was mandated to make a survey of the distribution of the Clubs between the sub-districts in Ontario and submit a report on the findings.

 

The committeeís first proposal was to create three new sub-districts. There were a lot of pros and cons both at the Council level and at the Board of Governors. Finally, at this Multiple District "A" Convention the delegates voted in favour of two new Districts namely A15 and A16. These new sub-districts required the approval of Lions International pending their starting operation on July 1, 1976 .

Fifty Eighth Multiple District "A" Convention

May 27-30, 1978 Brampton-Bramalea, Ontario

 

Most clubs in Multiple District "A" who ordered Lions supplies from the store in Niagara Falls complained that they were overcharged because of the excise tax, the import charges and the exchange which was changed to: US dollars. Second Year International Director Lion Austin Jennings and Lion Bert Mason had been delegated to look into this matter. There was an almost all night meeting between those two Directors, International Director Lion Bill Maguire, Treasurer Lion H.H. Ernie Moore, Secretary Larry Carlisle and Council Chair Norman Tartre. International Director Wroblewski who was the International Guest Speaker also attended.

 

23 new clubs were formed during the term ending June 30, 1978 with Multiple District "A" having 637 clubs.

 

It was also announced that Past District Governor Lion Donat Frechette had been appointed Special Extension Representative responsible for new Club is District A4 and the Province of Quebec except for the part of District A6 covered in that Province.

24 new Clubs organized during 1978-1979 bringing the total in Multiple District "A" to 657.

 

PCC Lion Gerry Albert was appointed International Extension Representative for the territory covered by District 5-M-10 and all Districts in Ontario with the exception of District A4.

 

Multiple District "A" Secretary Lion Larry Carlisle was retired as Extension Representative for Lions Clubs International, a position he held since November 1962.
