Twentieth Multiple District "A" Convention

June 23-25, 1940 Montreal , Quebec

 

The term ending 1939-1940 ended with 11 new Clubs and 563 new members. Multiple District "A" then consisted of 103 clubs and 4363 members.

 

Governors elected for 1940-1941 were:

District A2 - Lion G. Ernest Bennett, St. Catherines , Ontario

District A3 - Lion Cliff Cotter, Ottawa , Ontario

District A4 - Lion Sam Rothschild, Sudbury , Ontario

 

District Governor Lion Cliff Cotter, District A3, Ottawa , Ontario , was elected CHAIRMAN of the Board of Governors.

 

Twenty First Multiple District "A" Convention

June 25-27, 1941 Toronto , Ontario

 

There was a gain of 263 members during the past term.

 

Once more, because of the increase in the number of clubs, Multiple District "A" were authorized to add another sub-district which was identified as District A5.

 

Governors elected for 1941-1942 were:

 

District A1 - Lion George Lavelle. Palmerston , Ontario

District A2 - Lion J.H. Sandham, St. Catherines , Ontario

District A3 - Lion George M. Bosnell, Toronto , Ontario **

**Governor A3, Lion George M. Bosnell resigned and was replaced by International Counselor Lion Dr. Charles Lennox.

 

Lion Governor William K. Wylie, District A5, Schumacher , Ontario , was elected CHAIRMAN of the Board of Governors.

 

International Counselor Lion Peterson was elected International Director for the term 1941-1943 at the International Convention held in New Orleans , Louisiana , USA , on July 22-25, 1941 .

 

Twenty Second Multiple District "A" Convention

June 21-24 1942 Toronto , Ontario

 

The Multiple District "A" Convention was held in conjunction with the International Convention that was held in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , at the same time. Many International dignitaries attending the International Convention took the time to attend some of the Multiple District "A" functions.

 

Many Lion dignitaries visited with the Canadian Lions. Included were:

Governor of the Lions of Central America ;

ÿ                  Lion The Honorable Dr. Guatavo Cuervo Rubio

Vice President of the Republic of Cuba ;

ÿ                  Third International Vice President Lion D. A. Sheen;

 

ÿ                  Secretary General Melvin Jones

 

Chairman of the Board of Governors. Lion William K. Wylie, reported that International had come up with a most general offer in that they would pay a full time stenographer, equip and maintain an office to allow Special Representative Bruce Malcolm to act as Secretary to the Multiple District and take charge of the Canadian Office.

 

The only expenses of Multiple District "A" would be the monthly rent and other incidental disbursements. Chairman Wylie invited the Lions to visit the new office.

Governor Lion David Amory, Montreal , Quebec , was elected CHAIRMAN of the Board of Governors.

 

The term 1941-1942 closed with 122 new clubs and 4700 members.

 

Twenty Third Multiple District "A" Convention

June 30th, July 1st, 1943 Niagara Falls, Ontario

 

The term 1942-1943 ended with 122 clubs and 5747 members

 

At this Convention there innovations were implemented:

 

ÿ      Luncheon honouring Club Presidents and Secretaries

ÿ      International night banquet

ÿ      Sightseeing trip

ÿ      Luncheon for the ladies

ÿ      District Governors banquet and ball.

**Second term for the Governor of A5

 

Governor Lion Walter C. Fisher, St. Catherines , Ontario , District A2, was elected CHAIRMAN of the Board of Governors.

 

International Counselor Dr. Charles O. Lennox was elected International Director for the term 1943-1945 at the International Convention held in Cleveland , Ohio , USA , on July 20-22nd, 1943 .

 

Twenty Fourth Multiple District "A" Convention

June 19-21, 1944 Muskoka , Ontario

 

The Convention was held at Elgin House, Muskoka , Ontario .

 

At this Convention other innovations were implemented:

ÿ      Steamer Cruise on Lake Muskoka

ÿ      Necrology Service

 

An impressive Necrology Service was held in the chapel.

Twenty Fifth Multiple District "A" Convention

June 24-26, 1945 Quebec City , Quebec

 

The 25th anniversary of Lions in Canada

 

Three Lions Clubs were celebrating that anniversary, namely, Windsor , Toronto and Hamilton . The Chairman presented a lectern to each of the three clubs.

 

Special Guests at this Convention were International President Lion Skeen and Secretary General Melvin Jones.

 

At this Convention a daylong seminar was held for the Deputy District Governors who were responsible to after the Zones.

 

The magazine "LION NEWS" created the previous year received approval to become a monthly publication.

 

The year 1944-1945 ended with 136 clubs and 6835 members.

Governor Lion W. Dalton Higgs, District A1, London , Ontario was elected CHAIRMAN of the Board of Governors.

 

International Counselor Lion Walter C. Fisher was elected International Director for the term 1945-1947.

 

Twenty Sixth Multiple District "A" Convention

June 23-26, 1946 Niagara Falls, Ontario

 

Special International Extension representative Bruce Malcolm succeeded in organizing 17 new clubs during the year 1946-1947. Multiple District "A" then had total of 152 clubs and 8187 members.

 

The International President Lion Ramiro Collazo was the Convention Guest of Honour. He took the time to visit each of the five districts.

District A2 - Lion Reginald C. Everett, Port Credit, Ontario

Governor Lion Russell F. Hunter, Napanee , Ontario was elected CHAIRMAN of the Board of Governors.

 

Twenty Seventh Multiple District "A" Convention

June 29-July 2, 1947 Windsor , Ontario

 

During the term 1946-1947 18 new clubs were organized bringing in 1229 new members.

This convention in Windsor was the largest in attendance with 922 delegates and other representing 118 clubs.

 

International President Lion Chilford Pierce and Secretary General Melvin Jones were in attendance.

 

Governors elected for the term 1947-1948 were:

 

District A1 - Lion Lloyd Edighoffer, Mitchell , Ontario

District A2 - Lion William A Phipps, Paris , Ontario

District A3 - Lion Gordon Belyea, Toronto , Ontario

District A4 - Lion J.S. Gil es, Lachute , Quebec

District A5 - Lion Stanley Darling, Burks Falls , Ontario

 

Governor Lion William A Phipps, Paris , Ontario , was elected CHAIRMAN of the Governors Council.

 

Note: This is the first indication that the term "Council Chairman" is being used. There is no indication as to why this was changed or when.

 

International Third Vice President, Lion Walter C. Fisher was elected Second Vice President Lions International.

 

Twenty Eighth Multiple District "A" Convention

June 28-30, 1948 Timmins , Ontario

 

During the term 14 new clubs were organized adding 653 members.

 

The Convention was held at the McIntyre Arena with an attendance of 931 delegates, the largest number to date.

 

Governors elected for the term 1948-1949 were:

 

District A1 - Lion Clayton B. Rawling, Windsor , Ontario

District A2 - Lion P.V. Smith, Grimsby , Ontario

District A3 - Lion Stanley A. Darling, Peterborough , Ont.

District A4 - Lion J. Donald Carmichael, Gananoque, Ont.

District A5 - Lion Gregory T. Evans, Timmins , Ontario

 

Council Chairman elected for the term 1948-1949 - Lion Stanley Darling

Lion Past District Governor Walter Fisher elected International First Vice President.

 

Twenty Ninth Multiple District "A" Convention

 

Each of the five Districts held their own convention at difference dates in the month of May, 1949.

 

District A1 - May 31, 1949 - London , Ontario

District A2 - May 25, 1949 - Hamilton , Ontario

District A3 - May 26, 1949 - Toronto , Ontario

District A4 - May 27, 1949 - Montreal , Quebec

District A5 - May 29, 1949 - North Bay, Ontario

 

The delegates decided that only one convention would be held in Multiple District "A" in future years.

 

There were 14 new clubs organized during the term 1948-1949.

 

Because of the ever-increasing number of Clubs, International authorized the creation of an additional sub-district to be identified as A6.

District A1 - Lion Arnold McNair - Milverton, Ontario

District A2 - Lion John F. Farlow, Woodstock , Ontario

District A3 - Lion Robert D. Little, Richmond Hill , Ontario

District A4 - Lion DíArcy Coulson, Ottawa , Ontario

District A5 - Lion Jack Smale, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

District A6 - Lion Jack Stokes, Swastika, Ontario

 

Governor Lion Robert P. Little, Richmond Hill , Ontario was elected COUNCIL CHAIRMAN of the Governors Council.

 

International First Vice President of the International Association was elected International President. Thus Lion Walter Fisher became the second Canadian to attain this high office.
